Why Saying "Periodt, Sis" Is Not Bad English

Have you ever heard someone say “periodt,” “sis” or “chile”? Most likely if you’ve been on social media. You might think that it’s just internet slang — and you’d be wrong. These words are actually part of a distinct English dialect developed by Black American communities. Say hello to African American Language, or AAL.

While many Black Americans have to code-switch from African American Language to “standard” American English, many non-Black content creators are now using popular Black sayings to seem funny or trendy. We’ll be exploring what AAL is, why it’s been so stigmatized and what the future holds for the dialect.
